Calculating Overtime
When a semi-monthly pay period is chosen, calculations for compensation of employees is not as straight forward as weekly, bi-weekly, or daily pay periods. In the chart above, an explanation of how hours and overtime are calculated is presented. As the rules for compensating employees are based on a forty hour WORKWEEK, when a pay period starts during a WORKWEEK, compensation must be calculated based on the START of the WORKWEEK. Employees are not paid twice for hours worked, but hours eligible for overtime are considered when calculating total compensation.
